Hadiya Robinson | Crit 2 | Portrait

Ignore the picture quality, it was taken with my phone.

I'm kind of new to watercolor, but i wanted to try something different. I like how I treated the shirt but everything else got a little muddy. I need more practice with the watercolor, but I think I want to stick to a few select colors to express the mood in the picture. Perhaps the blues, and magenta colors. Any tips on how to use watercolors better?

  1. I don't know anything about watercolor, but I love this! I think you did a great job with the color at the bottom, and I love how it bleeds out into the background.

  2. I actually think you did a really nice job with the water color - the most frustrating thing using water color is that you aren't able to control it as well as other mediums. If you're trying to prevent colors from bleeding into one another, wait for one layer to dry completely before you start painting with another color (although I kind of like the way your colors bleed into each other) One thing you can try using is water color sticks where you can actually draw on the paper with them then paint over that with water and it looks the same as regular water color. I like to use them because it gives me more control over where the color actually ends up compared to normal water color paints.
